History

Midway took the tournament into polygons in Mortal Kombat 4, the first main entry to leave sprites behind. Fighters stand as 3D models on a 2D line, and a weapon can be pulled off the wall of the arena.

The arcade shift dates to 1997, with fatalities still ending a match after the life bar empties. Goro's era of painted sprites gives way to chunkier limbs and a new set of combo dials.

The Nintendo 64 version is a home port of that arcade change. A Game Boy and a Game Boy Color edition sit further off to the side, while the polygon cast is what the Nintendo 64 cart was translating.
