Tom Nook hands over a house and a debt in Animal Crossing, a town that runs on a real-time clock. Neighbors move away if the days pass without you, and letters arrive in place of any win screen.
Nintendo's first Western release of the series is the GameCube town, dated to 2001 already. K.K. Slider plays on Saturday nights, shops close in the evening, and a fossil in the ground waits for the museum rather than for a combat reward.
New Horizons and the handheld towns are separate games. This clock, these neighbors, and Nook's loan are the Western town's own rituals, including the Japanese Nintendo 64 original that shares the same idea under an earlier name.
