History

Near-miss boosts fund the crashes in Burnout, the 2001 racer with which Criterion started the series. Traffic is both the obstacle and the fuel, and a GameCube port followed the PlayStation 2 original.

A scrape that does not quite hit fills the meter, and a real hit ends the run. The later games added a crash mode you play on purpose; this first one still wants you to survive the traffic you are using.

Criterion's opening argument is the near miss. The cube port is that argument after the PlayStation 2 release, wrecks included.
