History

Stages react to the music in Space Invaders Extreme, the 2008 Taito release that treats the fleet as something a soundtrack can trigger. Fever, lasers, and ships unknown to the 1978 cabinet fill the screen. Backbone helped some versions, while this DS game is Taito's music-linked Invaders.

Color matches and chains feed a fever state in which the weapons and the backdrop change. Hits answer the beat instead of sitting under unrelated music. A laser or a special ship can clear a formation the plain cannon cannot.

The old cabinet marched one fleet down a black field. Here the formations break into patterns tied to tracks, with bonus waves that do not resemble that march. You still move along the bottom and shoot upward.

The DS edition is Taito's own music-linked set. Copies on other hardware that Backbone touched are separate builds. The shift into fever is the moment a stage changes shape.
