Square Enix rebuilt the Famicom story as Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen, a DS remake from 2008 with Akira Toriyama's art drawn again. The chapter structure remains. Ragnar, Alena, Torneko, and the twin seers Meena and Maya each receive a chapter before the hero does.
Party chat lets you speak with companions in towns and on the road, which the older cartridge did not do. The hero's chapter still comes last, so the chosen ones gather before you guide the final member. North American players once knew the NES cartridge as Dragon Warrior IV.
Battles keep a first-person encounter view, now with redrawn monsters. A wagon and a growing lineup return once the separate tales converge. You are not handed one continuous biography from the title screen.
Toriyama's new illustrations replace the older portraits and bestiary drawings. Square Enix kept the chapter order instead of folding every hero into a single opening. The chat lines are the remake's clearest new voice.
Same series is the tight name match. Same franchise is the wider family. Same platform is other games on the systems named above.
