History

Class changes and a hero who builds a party define Dragon Quest III (1988), the Enix RPG Enix shipped on a Wednesday in Japan so students would not skip school. Akira Toriyama's monsters fill a world that opens more widely than the two quests before it.

The hero recruits companions, picks their classes, and later changes those classes after the party has already traveled. That second vocation is the system people remember, alongside Toriyama's bestiary.

Enix treated the Wednesday release as a way to keep the Famicom launch from emptying classrooms. The class-changing hero and those monsters made this the series' Famicom peak.
