Spirit balls turn a risen centurion into beasts in Altered Beast (1988), Sega's arcade game that opens with a call to rise from the grave. Enough orbs change a wolf form or a dragon form, and the cabinet was also a Genesis pack-in.
Zeus's resurrection and the beast transformations are the coin-op's spectacle. Punching spirits out of enemies is how the form advances.
The NES cart is a later port of that grave-and-beast idea. The arcade machine and the Genesis pack-in are the versions that made the call to rise famous, and the NES board follows them.
