You guide the hero as a child, an adult, and a father in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. ArtePiazza and Square Enix rebuilt the Super Famicom game for DS in 2009. A marriage choice decides who stands with him, and monsters can join the party.
Early chapters follow a boy traveling with his father. Later chapters age him into a husband and then a parent, and the plot continues through that family. The bride is not a cosmetic portrait; the line of the story follows her.
Creatures recruited in the field take battle slots beside human allies. That recruitment is a signature of this tale, the middle story of the Zenithian trilogy. The fourth Dragon Quest comes before it, and the sixth comes after.
The DS rebuild keeps those three ages and presents them with newer illustrations. ArtePiazza worked with Square Enix on the remake. The father he becomes is the reason the childhood chapters exist.
