History

A black gem at the bottom of a dungeon is the prize in The Black Onyx. Henk Rogers' 1984 computer role-playing game is often credited as the commercial role-playing game that opened Japan's home-computer market to the genre.

Parties, first-person corridors, and a quest built around that gem gave Japanese PC players a dungeon they could buy rather than type in from a magazine. The title is the treasure, so the goal is never abstract.

Rogers later became famous for other Japanese game business, but this dungeon is the credit the blurb preserves. The gem, the corridors, and the market it helped open are the story.
