Matching tiles vanish in pairs in Shanghai. Activision published Brodie Lockard's mahjong solitaire in 1986, and a stacked dragon of tiles has to be cleared by removing free pairs before a buried tile can move.
The layout, not a timer alone, is the opponent. Seasons, dots, and honors only leave if both copies are exposed, so a greedy first match can seal a tile the player needed at the end.
Lockard's computer version turned a table game into a solitaire of height and access. Later ports kept the dragon and the rule that a covered tile is not yet a move.
Same series is the tight name match. Same franchise is the wider family. Same platform is other games on the systems named above.
