History

A carrier deck is home base in Wings of Fury (1987), and the plane must strafe ships before it lands. Broderbund's side-scrolling World War II sortie spends its bombs on vessels and shore guns, then asks for the deck again.

Torpedoes, bombs, and machine guns are separate tools, and an enemy battleship is a different problem from a shore gun. The Pacific setting stays in profile, so altitude is a lane and the carrier is a moving runway at the edge of the screen.

Apple II players met the sortie first, and other home computers followed. Takeoff, attack, and a careful return to the deck are the loop the title never abandons.
