History

Tanooki suits and a world map turn short stages into a toy box in Super Mario Bros. 3, with airships parked between the levels. Raccoon tails, frog suits, and hammer overalls sit in the inventory for those short runs.

Koopalings hold those airships, and Boom Boom waits in the fortresses. A warp whistle, found rather than earned by a straight clear, skips whole regions of the map.

The game reached players in 1988 and became the third side-scrolling Mario, a cornerstone of the 8-bit lineup. Picking a suit and wandering the map matter as much as reaching any single flagpole.
