Super Mario 64 puts a castle full of paintings between Mario and Bowser, and each painting is a sandbox with several stars. Stars can be collected out of order once the castle doors begin to open.
Shigeru Miyamoto and Yoshiaki Koizumi used the Nintendo 64's analog stick to make Mario run, tiptoe, long-jump, and wall-kick. Peach's castle is the hub: the more stars collected, the more doors open, and the order of courses is loose after the first few.
A hundred and twenty stars exist, including stars that only appear after a course is already beaten. Yoshi on the roof is the prize for finishing the set. The camera, often fought as much as the enemies, taught a generation how a 3D platformer should be framed.
Later 3D Mario games, from Sunshine to Odyssey, still use a hub and a loose goal list. A limited compilation on Switch included this game for a time. Peach's castle, the analog stick, and the roof Yoshi belong to this original sandbox.
Same series is the tight name match. Same franchise is the wider family. Same platform is other games on the systems named above.
