History

POW blocks flip every pest on a single screen in Mario Bros., the cooperative attic game about bumping creatures from below. Shellcreepers, Sidesteppers, and Fighter Flies have to be hit from underneath and then kicked before they right themselves.

Mario and Luigi share the pipes and the platform, and a bumped brother also knocks the other plumber down. It is the arcade-born game on the NES, not Super Mario Bros.

Nintendo's single-screen cooperation dates to 1983, before the side-scrolling Mushroom Kingdom. The POW block and the bump-from-below rule are the whole sport.
