History

Taizo Hori pumps enemies until they pop in Dig Dug (1982), or he drops rocks onto them. Pookas and Fygars chase him through tunnels he carves in the dirt.

The pump is the whole weapon: inflate a monster to bursting, or leave it half-full while another closes in. Rocks lodged in the soil fall once the dirt beneath them is dug away.

Later games treat this digger as Mr. Driller's father. The original rounds stay small underground arenas, not the falling puzzle columns those descendants use.
