Coily the snake and bouncing balls intrude while Q*bert hops a pyramid and flips the color of each cube. Gottlieb's arcade character swears in symbols when he lands wrong or meets a creature on the same block.
The 1982 coin-op made the pyramid and that color-flipping hop famous. Ugg and Wrong-Way complicate the edges, but Coily is the chase players remember.
The character reached the NES long after the cabinet had already made him a name. The home board still asks for the same hop, the same cubes, and the same avoidance of Coily.
