History

Ed Logg and Dona Bailey designed Atari's Centipede (1981), a trackball shooter in a mushroom patch where the insect splits when hit. Spiders, fleas, and scorpions complicate the garden.

A flea plants extra mushrooms as it drops, and a poisoned mushroom sends the centipede diving straight down. The trackball flicks the wand along the bottom of the patch.

The cabinet's ball is the original control. Handheld ports keep the splitting bug and the mushrooms without that ball.
