History

Ed Rotberg's first-person tank duel Battlezone (1980) drew wireframe enemies on a vector screen. Atari's cabinet drew enough notice that the U.S. Army asked about a training variant.

A radar wedge and a slow turret decide whether an enemy tank or a saucer sits in the crosshair. Volcano silhouettes on the horizon give the wireframe field a sense of distance.

The Army's question was about a modified trainer attached to this cabinet's fame. The periscope view and the vector duel are the arcade game itself.
