History

Diving flags peel out of formation in Galaxian, Namco's shooter that sends aliens down at the player instead of only marching in rigid rows. The Flagship splits into escorts, and a dive is more dangerous than the formation's slow advance.

Namco's cabinet dates to 1979, and leaving the row to swoop was the step past locked ranks. The Flagship's dive is the cabinet's real threat.

The NES release is a much later port of that arcade shooter. The diving escorts and the Flagship are the coin-op's idea, and the home cart is carrying them across a long gap.
