History

Andrew Greenberg and Robert Woodhead sent parties into Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord, Sir-Tech's Apple II maze from 1981, with Werdna waiting below. Japanese Game Boy Color releases later carried the early scenarios.

Fighters, priests, and mages descend while you map a wireframe corridor by hand, because the screen will not draw the graph for you. Werdna waits under the maze, and a dead body needs a temple or it stays lost.

Those color handheld editions brought the same early scenarios to Japanese players long after the Apple II disks. A careful paper map is still part of surviving the proving grounds.
