Ostrich knights score by striking from above in Joust, Williams' duel of lances and wings. A buzzard rider is the enemy, and the lava pit's hand punishes anyone who drifts too low.
The arcade cabinet dates to 1982, and flapping keeps the ostrich aloft. The higher lance wins the collision, which is the rule that makes the chaos readable.
An NES port arrived years later. The cabinet is the original, with the ostriches and the buzzards, and the home cart is a later carrier of that same higher-lance rule.
