History

Junior climbs vines to free his father while Mario holds the cage in Donkey Kong Jr., and the first arcade story is reversed. The carpenter is the captor, and the son is the one dodging Snapjaws and pushing keys.

Nintendo's coin-op dates to 1982, with vines, chains, and keys on the path to the cage. Mario's traps sit between Junior and Donkey Kong.

A real NES port later carried that reversal home. The vines and the caged father are the arcade idea, and the console cart is a port of it rather than a new father-and-son plot.
