History

Banana peels and a red shell define Super Mario Kart, the Mode 7 racer whose handling stays slippery on purpose. Lakitu fishes a fallen driver back onto Rainbow Road, and Donut Plains hides a jump that a straight line will miss.

Nintendo's first Mario Kart uses the Super Nintendo's Mode 7 to rotate the track under the kart. A mushroom is a burst of speed, and the shell is a weapon, not scenery.

The game arrived in 1992 and is the original, not a later title that reused the cast. Slippery corners and those items are the rules later karts still answer.
