Mario Kart 8 bends tracks through anti-gravity so a course can drive on a wall and still be a race. Courses drive on walls and ceilings, and the hover chassis is what makes those surfaces legal.
Nintendo EAD made it for the Wii U, with hover-karts, a revised drift, and a roster that included the Koopalings as separate racers. Mercedes-Benz guest cars in a later update annoyed some players and delighted others; they are part of this version's history, not a rumor.
The track design is the reason it lasted: Mount Wario's downhill, Electrodrome's neon, and Rainbow Road's figure-eight. Twelve-player online races were the living-room version of a battle the local split screen could not hold.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch reworks battle mode and adds a booster course pass. That edition has its own page. Anti-gravity, the Koopalings, and the Mercedes guest carts mark the Wii U release Deluxe later revised.
Same series is the tight name match. Same franchise is the wider family. Same platform is other games on the systems named above.
