History

Infogrames brought Drakkhen from late-1980s computers to an early North American Super Nintendo release. Four heroes cross an overworld drawn with a three-dimensional view that was unusual for role-playing games of that moment.

The 1988 computer design uses that receding landscape instead of a flat icon map. Dragon rulers hold the story, and random attacks interrupt the walk between their islands of architecture.

Entering a palace drops the view to a closer confrontation. The strange overworld perspective, more than any single spell, is what made the Super Nintendo edition feel unlike its neighbors on the shelf.
