FTL Games made Dungeon Master a real-time first-person crawl, and it became a hit on the Atari ST in 1987 already. Four champions stand in a party grid, and a spell is drawn with runes while monsters keep moving.
Food, water, and a torch are resources, not flavor. The ST game is the one that shook the genre, because the dungeon did not wait for the player's turn.
A Super Nintendo port arrived years later. The rune spells and the champion portraits are what that later cartridge inherits from the ST original.
