Columns (1990) drops jewels in vertical stacks of three, and a line of matching gems clears. Sega's puzzle, remembered on the Genesis as a rival to falling-block games, began as a computer and arcade design.
Cycling the order of the three stones, then sliding the stack, is the entire decision before they lock. A magic gem can erase one color, a tool that behaves nothing like rotating a tetromino into a gap.
The Super Nintendo cartridge is a later home edition of that jewel rain. Genesis players already knew the rising speed and the same three-stone column.
