Waterdeep's sewers hide a beholders' lair in Eye of the Beholder, the first-person Advanced Dungeons & Dragons crawl Westwood developed for SSI. A party of four moves on a grid, and the portrait of each adventurer shows who is still standing.
The computer game is the original, with the city's underworld and the beholder at the end of the descent. Spells and melee are chosen from the portraits while the view stays in the corridor ahead.
A Super Nintendo port came afterward and carries that grid crawl home. The 1990 computer release under Waterdeep is the one the port is following, not a quest written for the console first.
