Mario's head is the paddle in Alleyway. Nintendo's brick-breaker from the Game Boy's early shelf in 1989 follows the Breakout tradition of a ball, a wall of bricks, and a bat that has to keep the ball alive.
Bonus stages freeze the destruction and arrange bricks into pictures, including ships and creatures a player can clear for the shape rather than the score. The ball speeds up, and a missed return ends the ball just as it would in the arcade original.
Launch-window shelves needed a game anyone could read in a second. Bricks and a familiar face did that job, with Mario as the bat instead of a nameless rectangle.
