History

Taito replaced bubbles with climbable rainbows in Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2, the Bubble Bobble follow-up whose 1987 cabinet stars Bub and Bob. Home versions followed that upright, including a later Game Boy Color release.

Bub and Bob show up as boys who throw rainbows as platforms and as weapons. Collapse a rainbow from the top of the screen and it crushes the monsters underneath.

Diamonds on the arcade design change which ending you can reach. The color cartridge carries the rainbow-climbing idea away from the cabinet without becoming a new Bubble Bobble sequel of its own.
