History

Ship fire knocks holes in a fortress during Rampart (1990), then a clock demands the walls be rebuilt. Atari Games alternates cannon defense with a building phase, and later home ports kept that two-beat round.

Tetris-like pieces drop so a gap in the curtain wall can be plugged before the next fleet arrives. Fail to enclose a castle and the round is already lost, no matter how many ships the cannons sank.

The arcade cabinet made the alternation famous, and later machines from computers to consoles copied it. Placing the wall, then answering the fleet, is the entire argument of the design.
