History

Onett's baseball bats and psychic flashes open EarthBound, the modern-dress journey of Ness and his friends. Paula, Jeff, and Poo join across a country of suburbs, cultists, and department stores, and Giygas waits at the end of that odd map.

Ape, HAL Laboratory, and Nintendo stand behind the cartridge, with Shigesato Itoi's writing in the tone of the battles. PSI and a bat replace a medieval sword, and a hamburger can matter more than a potion.

The Super Nintendo release in 1994 is the Mother game many players met through later reissues and the series' reputation. Saturn Valley's Mr. Saturns and the photo at the end belong to this cult RPG.
