Rare's GoldenEye 007 (1997) turned a film license into a split-screen shooter that console parties played longer than the story. Objectives are checklists inside film locations, and the watch magnet matters as much as the gun.
Martin Hollis led a small Rare team, with David Doak among the designers and Grant Kirkhope on the score. Missions quote the movie's locations, from the dam to the facility, but the objectives are checklists: plant a covert modem, photograph a scientist, escape on a time limit.
Stealth is optional and often abandoned. The watch magnet, the Klobb, and the proximity mines exist because the team was inventing console aiming with a single stick. Multiplayer maps such as Facility and Temple, and modes like Slappers Only, are why the cartridge stayed in the console.
A later Wii reimagining and a Switch-era remaster are different products. This page is Rare's Nintendo 64 GoldenEye 007 (1997).
