Afro Thunder and other exaggerated boxers headline Midway's Ready 2 Rumble Boxing, a cartoon bout from 1999 already. A rumble meter fills as punches land, and spending it unleashes a flurry that a simulation's stamina bar would never allow.
Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color versions followed the arcade-style original. The Game Boy Color card is a smaller ring, while the Nintendo 64 version keeps the big gloves and the taunts.
Afro Thunder's hair and the lettered specials are the personality. The meter, the taunt, and those cartoon bodies are the sport Midway was selling.
