History

Square's ring menu and a party of three define Secret of Mana (1993), known in Japan as Seiken Densetsu 2 on the Super Famicom. Combat happens on the field, and each hero's weapon gains levels that change the charge attack.

Cooperative play is the feature people still cite: a second and third player can take the girl and the sprite while the boy leads. The ring pauses the field and sorts magic, items, and weapons into a circle instead of a vertical list.

A mana sword that grows and a cannon-travel network tie the regions together. The three-player ring is why this Super Famicom quest stayed in the conversation.
