History

Off-road stages established a series in V-Rally (1997). Gravel changes the slide a tarmac stage would forgive. Infogrames' rally racer helped plant that name on PlayStation, and later ports and sequels kept using it.

Gravel, tarmac, and snow change how a slide should be caught. Co-drivers and checkpoint times are the rally language, not a closed oval's lap counter.

The Nintendo 64 release sits among those later arrivals. Those PlayStation races are what made the name a series rather than a one-off billboard.
