History

Danger Room style sparring is the frame for X-Men: Mutant Academy, Activision's 2000 one-on-one fighter. Wolverine's claws, Cyclops's optic blast, and Storm's weather sit on a versus roster instead of inside a scrolling brawl.

Marvel's students and teachers take turns as playable fighters, and a short story mode sends them through academy matches rather than through a single mutant's solo hunt. The combo timing is the skill, not a long walk between bosses.

A later Academy sequel continued the same versus idea. This release is the first of those fighter carts, the one that put the team into direct matches instead of a side-view march.
