History

A scrolling fight, not a versus round, is the shape of X-Men: Mutant Wars. Marvel's mutants appear in this 2000 side-view action game, a different title from the one-on-one Mutant Academy fighter released around the same time.

Claws, optic blasts, and a march through enemy waves replace a fighting-game health bar and a best-of-three. The team is the license; the camera is a side scroller's.

Academy matches ask who wins a duel. Mutant Wars asks whether the mutants can cross a stage, which is why the two carts do not substitute for each other.
