Jack Carver's boat job collapses into Far Cry, the 2004 computer shooter Crytek set on a tropical archipelago. Mercenaries, an experimental serum, and Dr. Krieger's operation fill the island, and the first CryEngine showed off long views through jungle canopy.
Stealth approaches and loud assaults both work because the vegetation is real cover, not a painted backdrop. The series that followed took the title far from this one boatman's bad day, but the original is the island and the engine demo that happened to be a campaign.
