EA Sports aimed FIFA 97 at the 1996 season and kept an isometric pitch on the Super Nintendo. The camera looks down the grass at an angle, so a through-ball reads differently from the sideline view in Konami's International Superstar Soccer.
National sides fill the menus, and one outfield runner stays under the controller at a time. Set pieces and a small radar are the tools for a match that resolves in a few minutes.
The annual stays inside EA's FIFA line of soccer games. International Superstar Soccer keeps its own teams, its own camera, and its own Konami match on a separate cartridge.
