History

Japan's first retail pair was Red together with Pocket Monsters (Pokemon Green Version). The later Japanese Blue, not this green cart, supplied more of what international Red and Blue became, and the pair dates to 1996.

Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle still leave Professor Oak's lab in Pallet Town. Version-exclusive creatures in the tall grass are the reason two friends would trade.

Japan's Blue revision adjusted encounters after the green release. International Red and Blue drew more heavily from that later blue cart.
