History

Johto's gyms open at odd hours in Pokémon Gold Version, because a clock inside the cartridge changes the route. Game Freak's pair reached Japan in 1999 and the West in 2000, and day or night decides which creatures are awake.

New Bark Town, a fresh set of gym leaders, and a later trip into Kanto after the league make the map larger than the first generation. Breeding, held items, and the Pokégear are tools the red-and-blue cartridges could not run.

Ho-Oh on the box is the legendary this version features, opposite Silver's beast. Crystal retold Johto afterward, and HeartGold is a much later remake, not this cartridge's battery-backed clock.
