tri-Ace and Enix opened the series with Star Ocean, a 1996 Super Famicom mix of real-time fights and private actions in town. A private action is a small scene between party members that can change a relationship if you leave them alone in the right shop.
Battles move on a field without a separate encounter screen. Skills assigned from a menu fire while the hero runs, and a town's optional scenes are easy to miss.
It stayed Japan-only until much later remakes. Those remakes are other releases; the Super Famicom original is the first private-action system and the first real-time sword swings of the line.
