History

Ubisoft, the Rayman team, spilled a magic drink across Earth in Tonic Trouble and followed the clumsy alien who dropped it. The 1998 3D worlds drew much harsher reviews than Rayman 2, and the comparison stuck.

Ed, the alien, stretches and misfires through kitchens and gardens warped by the tonic. The drink is the plot device, and the camera and the jokes never found the goodwill Rayman's pirate escape earned.

Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color versions carry that same spill. The harsher reviews and the clumsy alien are the reputation, next to a studio that had just shown it could do better.
