History

Digitized actors and graphic finishing moves announced Mortal Kombat when Midway put it in arcades. Scorpion's spear and Sub-Zero's freeze are performed by photographed fighters, and Goro towers over the human-sized roster.

The arcade arrival was in 1992, and the finishing moves were the detail that traveled by rumor. Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sonya, and Kano fill out a cast that looks like photos rather than drawings.

On the Super Nintendo the blood became sweat, a recolor that fed the violence debate. The sweat substitute is the Super Nintendo version's scar, not a feature of the arcade cabinet.
