History

Fuel gauges end the drive when they hit empty in Road Fighter, Konami's overhead arcade racer. Other cars are hazards, but running out of fuel is the loss even if the road is clear.

Konami's coin-op dates to 1984, and fuel pickups along the overhead lanes matter as much as threading traffic. A fast line that misses the can still fails when the gauge hits empty.

The Famicom version is a port of that coin-op, not a later console-born racing series. The overhead view and the fuel limit are the cabinet's rules, kept on the home board.
