Mid-lap boats replace cars in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Sumo Digital's 2012 Sega crossover whose karts switch among car, boat, and plane. A water section grows pontoons, a drop deploys wings, and Wii U and Nintendo 3DS received that transforming race.
Sega characters beyond Sonic fill the grid, and the course itself forces the vehicle change. All-Stars racing had existed before; the transformation mid-lap is this sequel's addition.
The Wii U and 3DS releases are that transforming grid. A lap that stays a car the whole way is a different game.
