Sonic Team built a speedy answer to Mario in Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), Sega's Genesis mascot debut. Later Wii and Nintendo 3DS reissues are that 16-bit game, not a new adventure, and a Game Boy Advance listing carries the same debut.
Green Hill Zone opens on loops, rings, and Dr. Robotnik's badniks. The spin dash is not in this original run, so speed comes from holding a slope rather than from a move Sonic gained afterward.
A reissue still ends at Robotnik's zones and the chaos emeralds of this first quest. Nobody booting the Wii or 3DS version is starting a fresh story with new stages.
Same series is the tight name match. Same franchise is the wider family. Same platform is other games on the systems named above.
