The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild lets you leave the Great Plateau and walk toward the castle without finishing a single divine beast. Weapons break, meals restore you, and the castle is visible from the first cliff.
Hideto Fujibayashi directed and Eiji Aonuma produced it as a break from dungeon order: climbing, cooking, weather, and weapon breakage replace the old key-and-lock temples. The Sheikah Slate's bombs, magnesis, and stasis are tools the player combines with the landscape rather than with a marked door.
It launched the same year on Wii U and Nintendo Switch. Calamity Ganon, the four divine beasts, and a century-old failure are the story, told mostly through memories Link recovers in any order. Shrines are the puzzles, scattered so the map stays a place instead of a checklist you must clear.
Tears of the Kingdom is the sequel and has its own page. This entry is Breath of the Wild.
Same series is the tight name match. Same franchise is the wider family. Same platform is other games on the systems named above.
