History

Floating arenas and a blast line define the rules, and Super Smash Bros. is HAL Laboratory's four-player fight starring Nintendo characters. A Poké Ball dropped on the platform can interrupt a smash that would have crossed the blast line.

Mario, Pikachu, Link, Samus, and the rest of the original roster knock each other off platforms instead of draining a traditional health bar. Damage raises the distance a hit will throw, which is why a late smash finishes what an early jab cannot.

The 1999 Nintendo 64 original is the first of the series that later grew on every home console. Items such as the Poké Ball and the home-run bat already turn a duel into a scramble.
